Biosafety cabinets, an integral part of hospital, research, and industry laboratories across the globe, create a clean and/or ventilated workspace for drug preparation, diagnosis, research, and development. In order to ensure the best protection for personnel, samples, and products, individuals must be confident that their biosafety cabinets align with regulatory authority and industry-approved standards. Biosafety cabinets, also referred to as microbiological safety cabinets or biological safety cabinets, provide a ventilated but enclosed workspace. These cabinets are used for three main purposes: The initial versions of biosafety cabinets had basic on/off switches but they are now equipped with a range of safety features which can all be monitored using software. These features can include sensors that monitor motor function and window position, as well as airflow monitoring and control using airflow sensors. In chemical, medical, biological research, and biopharma R&D, biosafety cabinets make sure that research experiments are performed in a sterile consistent setting. Similarly, in medical diagnostics, these cabinets protect both operators and samples from contamination...

AutoZone Enters $11 Million Settlement With California Over Improper Waste Disposal

Ignoring the personal pride associated with maintaining a vehicle yourself, disposing of motor oil is an annoying chore. While not terribly difficult, laziness sometimes gets the better of us. Why bother risking the wellbeing of your interior with dirty fluids when there’s a perfectly good storm drain nearby? While I’ve never dumped my fluids illegally, I know the temptation. Ten coffee cans full of used motorcycle oil will do that to you and, for every receptacle filled and slid to the back of your garage, the urge to tip them grows ever stronger. But I eventually sacked up and took them to AutoZone for recycling, effectively ending my youthful act of torpid rebellion. Unfortunately, AutoZone may have also had a problem with the competent disposal of used motor oil — and 5 million other environmentally hazardous waste items. Sounds like someone is about to “get in the zone” of a huge fine.  On Tuesday, the California Attorney General’s Office issued an $11 million settlement against the auto parts retailer over claims that the company illegally disposed of hazardous waste — such as motor oil, fluids, and batteries — at landfills never intended for such materials. This ...

Approaching 7-Year Anniversary, pFriem Family Brewers Keeps Growing

The landscape in the Pacific Northwest has changed considerably since Josh Pfriem, Ken Whiteman and Rudy Kellner opened pFriem Family Brewers in Hood River, Oregon, in 2012. Now on the verge of its seventh anniversary, pFriem is in the midst of a pair of expansion projects that will double its capacity in 2020. Since pFriem started, more than 140 other beer companies have opened in the state. Time hasn’t been kind to some aging Oregon breweries, though — from the closures of Bridgeport Brewing and Burnside Brewing to the shuttering of taprooms and pubs run by legacy breweries such as Craft Brew Alliance’s Widmer Brothers, FIFCO USA’s Portland Brewing, Alameda Brewing and Lompoc Brewing. Speaking to Brewbound, co-founder and brewmaster Josh Pfriem said his company’s goal is to stay relevant and “not become a legacy brand” by staying at the forefront of innovation, while also treating its offerings, including core beers, as “living beers that are progressing on a weekly basis.” He pointed to companies such as Allagash and Firestone Walker that have avoided such labels. “I don’t ever hear people refer to them as legacy brands because they’re very innovative and very on top of it,”...

The pressure to exclusively breastfeed is hurting mothers’ mental health

Before she gave birth to her daughter, Dr. Stephanie Liu, a Clinical Lecturer with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta, expected she would breastfeed, but after extolling the benefits of breastfeeding to her patients for years, nursing did not come easily for Liu—but the guilt did. “I struggled to get her to latch and when she did latch it was very painful. As a result, my milk supply was insufficient. For the first two weeks, I supplemented with formula and was racked with guilt that I was not doing the best for Madi,” she writes for The Conversation She is hardly alone in this. A recent commentary in the journal Nursing for Women’s Health explains that “[p]sychological pressure to exclusively breastfeed has the potential to contribute to postpartum depression symptoms in new mothers who are unable to achieve their breastfeeding intentions.” Liu points out that a large 2011 study found mothers who had negative breastfeeding experiences were more likely to have symptoms of depression. On a personal level, she understands why. “Breastfeeding was one of the things I looked forward to most when I was pregnant. In medica...

The first commercial monoclonal antibody (mAb) was approved in 1986 and today, the global market is large and growing. Reports estimate the size of the market to be approximately $100 billion with expectations of  it growing to more than $130 billion by 2023, a robust compound annual growth rate of more than 5.5%.1,2 The demand for mAbs and other antibody-based biologics continues to be fueled by a number of factors including: While demand increases, so does pressure on the biopharmaceutical industry to accelerate development, improve flexibility and reduce costs all while sustaining or improving drug product quality. New, innovative approaches are needed to address these challenges. In 2017, the BioPhorum Operations Group (BPOG), an industry consortium, published the Biomanufacturing Technology Roadmap in an effort to establish a dynamic and collaborative technology management process to accelerate change. The roadmap is intended to focus the effort of the biomanufacturing community and provide direction by identifying technology and/or manufacturing targets and prioritizing potential technological solutions. Adoption of next generation processing and technologies can enable i...

Within the London Borough of Sutton, on the fringes of South West London, Sutton Point is a mixed-use project over three tower blocks providing 332 new residential units alongside 4,500m2 office and commercial space and a 150-bedroom hotel. Sutton Council has named Sutton Point as the number one site in its unitary development plan, which guides development, conservation, regeneration and environmental improvement activity in the borough. The project has seen the existing Sutton Point Tower office blocks demolished to accommodate the £90m development. Sutton Point is located directly adjacent to Sutton train station which provides access to and from Central London. A shining addition to the skyline of suburban London, the landmark 11,000m2 scheme is expected to initiate regeneration of the local area with the creation of a vibrant, new community. FGS was brought to the project by main contractors Ardmore Group, commissioned to design, manufacture and install Sutton Point’s façade simultaneously across all three towers delivering the vision of PRC Architects. Restricted access was a key consideration due to the close proximity of the development to the train station and busy tra...

The best diamond gifts for every budget — from rings to necklaces

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you’ll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we may get a share of the revenue from your purchase. Mejuri’s Diamonds Team ring is a perfect foundational piece, and sold for $395 as opposed to the estimated $1,780 of traditional retail. Mejuri Diamonds are not a trend. Unlike many gifts that see their seasons of use and find their way to the donation pile, diamonds are meant to be kept forever. From one person to another, they’re a lasting symbol of sentimentality, reverence, and elegance. And, thanks to the burgeoning jewelry startup market, gifting a meaningful luxury is no longer restricted to those who have thousands of dollars to spend, though the options for those who do are better than ever. But before you buy, there are some tips to note: Necklaces and earrings a great gift, and especially so for newer relationships or those shoppers unsure about ring size. If you’re unclear on what her metal or color preference is, check what she wears every day or keeps in her jewelry box (most people stick to one metal family once they find what works with their skin tone). When in doubt, ask a m...

Endoplasmic reticulum stress impairment in the spinal dorsal horn of a neuropathic pain model

In the meantime, to ensure continued support, we are displaying the site without styles and JavaScript. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, but its role in neuropathic pain remains unclear. In this study, we examined the ER stress and the unfolded protein response (UPR) activation in a L5 spinal nerve ligation (SNL)-induced rat neuropathic pain model. SNL-induced neuropathic pain was assessed behaviorally using the CatWalk system, and histologically with microglial activation in the dorsal spinal horn. L5 SNL induced BIP upregulation in the neuron of superficial laminae of dorsal spinal horn. It also increased the level of ATF6 and intracellular localization into the nuclei in the neurons. Moreover, spliced XBP1 was also markedly elevated in the ipsilateral spinal dorsal horn. The PERK-elF2 pathway was activated in astrocytes of the spinal dorsal horn in the SNL model. In addition, electron microscopy rev...

Introducing: The Seiko Prospex 1970 Diver’s Re-Creation Limited Edition SLA033

This is something to quicken the pulses of Seiko dive watch enthusiasts: a modern version of the famous 6105, also known as the “Willard,” as that was the model worn by Martin Sheen in his portrayal of Captain Willard in Apocalypse Now. The original 6105 came in two versions – one was the standard cushion cased 8000/8009, and the other was the larger 8110/8119. The later is the model worn by Sheen in the film, and it’s a classic of dive watch design of the era – big, with an eye-catching asymmetrical case that features substantial crown guards and the crown at 4:00, with 150 meter water resistance. As with other dive watches of the era, the problem is not so much finding one as it is finding one in good condition; they were affordable and reliable, and were bought to be used. Used they were, under sometimes very harsh conditions (the 6105 was produced from 1968 to 1977) and this new model offers a chance to enjoy the broad-shouldered appeal of the original, with up-to-date materials and a modern movement. The movement is the caliber 8L35, with a 50 hour power reserve, and water resistance is now 200 meters. SLA033 features a Zaratsu-polished bezel (Zaratsu poli...

You may have heard of Bowden tubes, but what are they really? How are they different

You may have heard of Bowden tubes, but what are they really? How are they different from other extruders, and which should you choose? Find out in this guide to Bowden tubes. The extruder, where filament is melted and pushed out, is a key component in any FDM 3D printer. Extruders consist of a stepper motor and a hot end. The stepper motor grips the filament and feeds it to the hot end, which melts the plastic onto the bed. There are two main types of extruders: direct and Bowden. A direct drive extruder has the stepper motor on the print head itself, so filament gets pushed directly into the hot end. This means the print head has to carry the weight of the stepper motor as it moves along the x-axis. The Bowden extruder has the motor on the frame, far away from the print head. This is where the Bowden tube comes in. The motor feeds the filament through a Bowden tube (usually made of PTFE plastic) to the print head. The tube guides the filament from the fixed motor to the moving hot end, protecting the plastic from snapping or being stretched by constant movement. Flexible and rubber-like filaments can be difficult to print with Bowden tubes. Since these filaments aren’t rigid,...
